Through the night with a light from a bulb

The title here is from one of the lyrics quirks that kids come up with ... like Round John Virgin in Silent Night. It is a child's misinterpreted lyric to a line form God Bless America. But at this time of year it works. Bulbs bring the festivities indoors and stave off the early darkness of shortened days.

Gotta love the paperwhites. They are energetic little bundles and they always surprise me with their perfume. I also put several amaryllis to pot, including two new baby bulbs that came through this season when I went to repot.

Lovely photos of the paperwhites and amaryllis. Looks like you know what you are doing with the amaryllis. I let mine keep growing and bloom when they will. What is your secret for winter blooming?

Maggie, I know that the amaryllis love to be pot bound, but I break that rule and take them from their pots in the late spring and place them in well composted soil on the out side of my vegetable garden. On Labor Day I dig them up, cut back the leaves, and place them in the basement in a bag. Around T-giving, I bring them out, trim their roots, make a fresh cut at the neck and repot them. I put them in a sunny window and water them from the bottom sparingly until the first sprout appears. I seldom get Christmas blooms, but it makes for a lively February and March.
